The good news is that this is a genuinely dog-friendly city, with more than 20 dog parks and several off-leash beaches. Here are the neighborhoods that get it right, and roughly what you will pay to live in each.

Uptown: the value winner

If you have a dog and a budget, start here.

Uptown is home to Montrose Dog Beach, which is simply the best off-leash spot in Chicago. It is a 3.83-acre fenced stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline where dogs swim and run leash-free, open daily from 6 AM to 11 PM, with free waste bags and a dog-wash area to rinse off the sand.

Up the street there is also Puptown Dog Park in Margate Park, a 16,000-plus square foot fenced off-leash area for the days you do not want the beach.

Lakeview: lakefront access, quieter beach

Just south, Lakeview gives you the lakefront trail and Belmont Harbor Dog Beach.

Belmont Harbor is the calmer cousin to Montrose. It is smaller and less crowded, which a lot of dogs and their owners actually prefer, especially if your pup gets overwhelmed by a packed beach.

Lakeview runs pricier, averaging around $3,011, but you are paying for a North Side neighborhood with the lake at your back and plenty of walkable green space.

Lincoln Park: built for walking

Lincoln Park might be the most naturally dog-friendly neighborhood in the city, and it is not even close on foot traffic.

The lakefront trail runs right along it, the park itself is huge, and the tree-lined streets are made for the daily walk. You see dogs everywhere here, all day.

River North: the in-building option

River North is the play if you want dog amenities without stepping outside in a polar vortex.

A couple of the towers we track have serious in-building dog features. One Chicago has a 3,000-square-foot dog park and a dog wash right in the building. Wolf Point East has its own dog run and dog wash too.

One thing every dog owner should do

Get the permit.

To legally use a city Dog Friendly Area, including the off-leash beaches and parks, you need a DFA permit. It costs $10 per dog and requires proof of a current dog license or rabies vaccination, and you can get it through participating vets.

It is a small, easy step that a lot of new residents skip until they get a ticket.
