The Best Chicago Neighborhoods for Families Who Still Want City Life

Lincoln Park

The classic city-family neighborhood. Lincoln Park is anchored by Lincoln Elementary, a top-tier public school that families specifically move into the boundary for, plus magnet options nearby.

The green space is unmatched: the 1,200-acre park the neighborhood is named for, the free Lincoln Park Zoo, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, and the lakefront. Add roomy vintage greystones and a quick reach to downtown jobs, and it is the gold standard for city families.

Lakeview

Lakeview is the slightly more accessible North Side family pick, anchored by Nettelhorst Elementary, a well-regarded school that hosts the neighborhood farmers market and just landed city funding for a playground upgrade.

Families get lakefront access, a string of neighborhood parks with pools and programs, and a mix of historic greystones and modern units, especially in East Lakeview. It is walkable, lively, and close to the lake.

North Center and Roscoe Village

For the suburban-feel-inside-the-city crowd, these adjoining neighborhoods are hard to beat. Edgewater, Andersonville, and Hyde Park

A few more deserve a spot. Edgewater and Andersonville pair lake access, Foster Beach, and family festivals with an IB elementary in Peirce School and a very walkable, welcoming feel. Hyde Park brings a true university-town atmosphere, anchored by the University of Chicago, with Jackson Park, the Museum of Science and Industry, and strong school options.

Downtown families: Lakeshore East and the South Loop

Here is the part people miss: you can keep your family downtown.

Lakeshore East is a planned, park-centered neighborhood tucked into the northeast corner of the Loop, with Ogden International as the neighborhood elementary and Maggie Daley Park, with its three-acre play garden, right next door. It feels like a small town inside downtown.

The South Loop is the roomier downtown option, with South Loop Elementary, larger apartments and new construction offering two- and three-bedroom layouts, and Grant Park and the Museum Campus at the doorstep. Streeterville rounds out the downtown trio, near Navy Pier and the Chicago Children's Museum.
