The lakefront, north to south

Chicago's lakefront is a continuous string of beaches connected by the 18.5-mile Lakefront Trail. Here is which neighborhood gets which beach.

The best neighborhoods for lakefront summer

A few neighborhoods stand out for putting it all at your feet.

Lincoln Park may be the best all-around. It has North Avenue Beach (the famous one with the boat-shaped beach house, volleyball, and Castaways beach bar), Diversey Harbor, and a long stretch of the trail through the park itself.

Streeterville and the Gold Coast put Oak Street Beach at the base of downtown, with Ohio Street Beach and the trail a short walk away. It is the most urban way to do the lake, steps from the Mag Mile.

Edgewater and Uptown are the North Side value picks. Uptown has Montrose, the largest beach, plus the dog beach and harbor; Edgewater has Foster and Osterman and the northern start of the trail. Both sit right on the path.

South Loop anchors the south end, next to the Museum Campus, 12th Street Beach, Northerly Island, and Burnham Harbor, with Grant Park and the festival action close by.

Beyond the beach: trail and harbors

Lakefront living is more than sand. The Lakefront Trail is the city's summer artery, 18.5 paved miles for running and biking, and neighborhoods from Edgewater to Hyde Park sit right on it.

If boating is your thing, the harbors define a whole lifestyle: Belmont and Diversey Harbors serve Lakeview and Lincoln Park, Monroe Harbor frames the downtown skyline, and Burnham Harbor sits by the Museum Campus. Slips lease seasonally and the popular harbors keep waitlists, so plan ahead.

Summer on the water

The activities are the payoff. Play volleyball at North Avenue Beach, grab a drink at Castaways, rent a kayak or paddleboard, bike the trail end to end, or catch a concert at Huntington Bank Pavilion on Northerly Island. The swimming season runs roughly late May through early September, with lifeguards on duty into Labor Day.
