Commute Times Ranked: Every Neighborhood to the Loop, O'Hare & Millennium Park

TL;DR We measured transit commute times from every Chicago neighborhood we track to three anchors: the Loop, O'Hare, and Millennium Park. The Loop itself is 11 minutes to downtown, River North and the West Loop run under 20, and the Blue Line neighborhoods (Logan Square, Wicker Park) crush the O'Hare commute. The further north you go, the longer the downtown trip.
If you commute, your neighborhood choice is really a commute choice. So we put numbers on it.
For every neighborhood we track, we measured the transit (CTA) travel time to three anchors renters care about: the Loop for work, O'Hare for travel, and Millennium Park for downtown life. Here is the ranking.
Transit commute times by neighborhood
All figures are CTA transit minutes, averaged across the buildings we track in each neighborhood, sorted by the commute to the Loop.
| Neighborhood | To the Loop | To O'Hare | To Millennium Park |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Loop | 11 | 57 | 13 |
| Printer's Row | 16 | 66 | 18 |
| West Loop | 18 | 64 | 24 |
| River North | 19 | 64 | 20 |
| South Loop | 21 | 73 | 18 |
| Fulton Market | 22 | 62 | 20 |
| Lakeshore East | 23 | 70 | 12 |
| Streeterville | 26 | 72 | 21 |
| Wicker Park | 26 | 48 | 24 |
| Old Town | 27 | 66 | 24 |
| Gold Coast | 27 | 69 | 20 |
| Logan Square | 32 | 43 | 31 |
| Lincoln Park | 35 | 69 | 31 |
| Lakeview | 43 | 69 | 38 |
| Uptown | 45 | 70 | 41 |
| Edgewater | 55 | 75 | 40 |
If your priority is the Loop
The downtown-core neighborhoods win, obviously. The Loop, Printer's Row, the West Loop, and River North all put you at a Loop desk in roughly 11 to 19 minutes.
The drop-off is steep as you head north. Lincoln Park is already 35 minutes, and by the time you reach Lakeview, Uptown, and Edgewater you are looking at 43 to 55 minutes each way. That is real time, and it is the trade for the cheaper rents and the lakefront feel up there.
If your priority is O'Hare
This is where the map flips, and it is all about the Blue Line.
Logan Square (43 minutes) and Wicker Park (48) are the clear winners, because the Blue Line runs straight from those neighborhoods to the airport with no transfers. Bucktown and River West follow at around 53.
Everywhere else, O'Hare is a 60-to-75-minute haul on transit. If you fly constantly, that Blue Line access is worth real money.
If your priority is downtown life
For getting to Millennium Park, the lakefront core wins. Lakeshore East (12 minutes) and the Loop (13) are essentially walking distance, with South Loop and Gold Coast close behind.
How to use this
Pick the anchor that dominates your week. If you grind in the Loop five days a week, every minute counts and the downtown neighborhoods earn their premium. If you travel constantly, the Blue Line corridor is your friend even if it costs you a few minutes downtown. If you want value and do not mind a longer ride, the North Side is wide open.
These times are transit-based, and we also track driving, walking, and biking per building, so a car or a bike changes the math. Pair this with our most walkable neighborhoods ranking and our average rent by neighborhood breakdown to find the spot that fits both your commute and your budget.
