Grocery Run: Which Chicago Neighborhoods Have a Jewel, Mariano's, or Whole Foods Within Walking Distance

Wicker Park and Ravenswood lean Jewel-Osco and Mariano's, Lakeshore East leans Mariano's, and Oak Park leans Trader Joe's. Streeterville at 88 percent and the Gold Coast at 81 percent are right behind.

It is one of the most underrated questions in apartment hunting: how far is the grocery store? A real supermarket within walking distance makes a car optional, makes weeknights easier, and is a reliable sign of a genuinely walkable neighborhood. So we pulled the numbers on how close the big chains actually are.

The neighborhoods where you never need a car for groceries

A tight tier of neighborhoods scores 100 percent, meaning a full-size supermarket is a 10-minute walk or less from every building we track. Wicker Park, Lakeshore East, Oak Park, and Ravenswood all clear the bar.

What is fun is the local flavor of each. Lakeshore East and Ravenswood cluster around Mariano's, Wicker Park leans on Jewel-Osco, and Oak Park renters get a Trader Joe's close by. These are smaller, denser pockets where the store is genuinely around the corner rather than across a highway.

The very good, not quite perfect

Streeterville at 88 percent, the Gold Coast at 81 percent, and Old Town at 80 percent all land in the 80s, which in practice means almost everyone has a store nearby with only a few pockets that are a slightly longer walk. Streeterville is Whole Foods country thanks to its lakefront high-rises, while the Gold Coast and Old Town lean heavily on Jewel-Osco. These are still excellent grocery neighborhoods.

The ones to check building by building

Plenty of well-known neighborhoods are more variable once you measure the real walk. Lakeview sits at 68 percent, Uptown at 61, River North at 60, the South Loop at 58, Edgewater at 57, and West Loop at 53. Further down, River West and Fulton Market land in the low 40s and Lincoln Park at 33 percent, largely because parts of them were built as work and dining districts first and the nearest store is just past the comfortable 10-minute mark. If you are renting in any of these, it is worth checking the specific walk to the nearest store, because it ranges from very close to a longer stroll depending on the building.

How to use this

Grocery access is a small thing that you feel every single week. If a car-free life is the goal, prioritize one of the 100 percent neighborhoods, and when you tour, actually walk the route to the nearest store, ideally carrying the imaginary bags home.
