The new-construction neighborhoods win

If in-unit laundry is the priority, the West Loop is the surest bet, with about 88% of the buildings we track offering it. Fulton Market, the Loop, Lakeshore East, and the South Loop are all right behind in the 74 to 82% range.

The reason is simple: these are the neighborhoods built up most recently, and new buildings come with in-unit washer/dryers as standard. Walk into almost any glass tower in the West Loop and the laundry is in the unit.

The vintage neighborhoods offer something different

On the other end, Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, and the Gold Coast have a lower share of in-unit laundry, and that is the flip side of their biggest charm: they are full of classic Chicago architecture.

These neighborhoods are rich in vintage walk-ups, greystones, and converted two-flats, the buildings people fall in love with for their character, high ceilings, and tree-lined streets. Many of those have a shared laundry room in the building rather than machines in the unit. It is a fair trade a lot of renters happily make for the look and feel of old Chicago.

And the good news: even in these neighborhoods, the newer buildings have in-unit laundry, so you can always find it. You simply have more vintage options to weigh alongside it.

If it is a must-have and you do not want to think about it, start your search in the West Loop, Fulton Market, the Loop, or the South Loop, where it is close to universal.
