The architecture is the other draw. This is a neighborhood of stately brownstones and traditional buildings, and the apartments often come with larger, more classic floor plans than the glassy new construction nearby. Renters who want space and character over a brand-new finish gravitate here.

Two notes on these numbers. The cheapest units tend to sit in older buildings, so they often skip in-unit laundry. If a washer and dryer in the unit is a must-have, plan to pay above these starting prices.

Studios starting around $1,763 and one bedrooms around $2,195 are genuinely accessible for a lakefront downtown neighborhood, often in the older buildings with the classic layouts. At the top. Two bedrooms average over $4,200 to start, and the doorman towers and the lone three bedroom climb into luxury territory fast.

So the Gold Coast splits in two. The vintage studios and one bedrooms are a relative value, while the larger and newer units carry the full prestige price.

The buildings worth knowing

The Oliver on LaSalle is the value standout and the most-reviewed here at 4.4 stars across 250 reviews, home to some of the lowest studio entry points in the neighborhood.

1133 N Dearborn is the higher-rated of the Dearborn pair at 4.5 stars, with 1120 N LaSalle a solid mid-tier option, both near Clark/Division.

Getting around without a car

The Red Line stop at Clark/Division sits right in the middle of the Gold Coast, which puts the Loop minutes away. The Mag Mile, the lakefront, and Old Town are all walkable.

Groceries are easy, with a Jewel-Osco serving most of the neighborhood and a Whole Foods nearby. You do not need a car to live well here.
