TL;DR The Lakefront Trail is 18-plus miles of car-free path along Lake Michigan, and a string of buildings sit right on it. Lakeshore East towers like Aqua and Shoreham & Tides, the Streeterville high-rises, and lakefront Lakeview and Edgewater buildings put the trail at your door. The best running and biking address in the city.

The Lakefront Trail is Chicago's crown jewel for anyone who runs, bikes, or just loves a long walk by the water. It runs 18.5 mostly car-free miles along Lake Michigan, with separated bike and pedestrian lanes on most of it. Living right on it means the lake is your front yard. Here is where to do exactly that.

The buildings closest to the trail

The trail hugs the shoreline, so the best access comes from the lakefront neighborhoods. A few standouts:

Lakeshore East is arguably the best of all. Aqua and Shoreham & Tides sit in a park-centered pocket steps from the lake and the trail, with Maggie Daley Park and Millennium Park right there too. It is downtown living with the trail as your backyard.

Streeterville puts the high-rises near Ohio Street and Oak Street Beaches, with the trail and Navy Pier close. Buildings like The Saint Grand and North Water are a quick walk to the water.

Lakeview, Uptown, and Edgewater carry the trail up the North Side, so their lakefront buildings give you a protected path north toward the beaches and south toward downtown, often at a friendlier rent than downtown.

Why trail access is worth it

A trail at your door rewires your routine. Morning runs, evening bike rides, weekend walks, all without driving anywhere or fighting traffic. The trail connects four major parks (Lincoln, Grant, Burnham, and Jackson) and a string of beaches, so your outdoor options stretch for miles in both directions.

For active renters, it is hard to overstate how much a lakefront address gets used once it is right there.

How to use this

If running or biking is central to your life, prioritize a lakefront neighborhood and confirm the walk to the trail when you tour, since being on the lake side of Lake Shore Drive makes a real difference.
