Festival Season Map: The Best Summer Street Fest Near Your Apartment

TL;DR Chicago summers run on street festivals, and nearly every neighborhood has one. Wicker Park has Do Division and Wicker Park Fest, Lincoln Square has Square Roots, Pilsen has Fiesta del Sol, and the lakefront has the Air & Water Show. A Chicago summer weekend almost always has a street festival within walking distance, and most are free to enter. Living near a good one means live music, food, and your whole neighborhood out on the street. Here is the map.

West Town, Wicker Park and Ukrainian Village

The densest festival calendar in the city. Do Division kicks things off on Division Street in late May with two music stages, West Fest brings music and makers to Chicago Avenue in July, and Wicker Park Fest takes over Milwaukee Avenue in late July with 50-plus indie acts and a Pet Fest. If you rent here, your summer social calendar is basically set.

Lincoln Square and Ravenswood

A charming, walkable festival hub. Maifest celebrates the neighborhood's German heritage in late May, and the big one is Square Roots in mid-July, with dozens of music acts across four stages and a craft-beer focus, run with the Old Town School of Folk Music.

Lincoln Park, Lakeview and Roscoe Village

The North Side classics. Ribfest hits North Center in early June, the Lincoln Park Greek Fest and the Belmont-Sheffield Music Festival anchor early summer, the Sheffield Music Festival & Garden Walk opens up private gardens in July, and Retro on Roscoe closes the season in September with classic cars and cover bands.

Old Town and Andersonville

Old Town hosts the juried Old Town Art Fair in mid-June, set in its leafy historic triangle. Up north, Andersonville's Midsommarfest brings a Swedish maypole and live music to the Clark Street corridor in mid-June.

Pilsen and Chinatown

Pilsen brings the energy with the Tacos y Tamales Festival in mid-July and Fiesta del Sol in late July, one of the largest Latino festivals in the Midwest. Chinatown hosts the Dragon Boat Race at Ping Tom Park in June and the Chinatown Summer Fair in late July.

West Loop and downtown

The West Loop's Taste of Randolph turns Restaurant Row into a food-and-music fest in mid-June. Downtown and the lakefront host the citywide giants: the Chicago Blues Festival in June, Taste of Chicago in Grant Park in July, the Air & Water Show off North Avenue Beach in August, and the Chicago Jazz Festival over Labor Day weekend.
