The Most Walkable Apartment Buildings in Chicago

TL;DR A neighborhood can be walkable while a specific building inside it is not, so we ranked the buildings themselves. The Loop and River North towers top the list, led by Randolph Tower, Millennium on LaSalle, and 215 West, where roughly three hundred destinations sit within a 10-minute walk of the lobby.
Walk scores usually rate a whole neighborhood, which hides a lot. A building on the sleepy edge of Lincoln Park can be a very different walk than one a mile away in the heart of it. So we did something more useful: we ranked the actual buildings by how much you can reach on foot from the front door.
The most walkable buildings
These are the addresses where the most of Chicago is genuinely within a 10-minute walk, counted by true routed walking time on real sidewalks.

| Millennium on LaSalle | The Loop | 297 |
| 215 West | The Loop | 296 |
| MDA Apartments | The Loop | 292 |
| OneEleven | The Loop | 288 |
| State and Grand | River North | 286 |
| Parkline Chicago | The Loop | 283 |
| MILA | The Loop | 281 |
| AMLI River North | River North | 281 |
| Century Tower | The Loop | 280 |
What makes a building walkable
It comes down to three things, and the leaders nail all three.
First, density of destinations: how many restaurants, shops, and services sit within that 10-minute radius. Second, variety: it is not just bars, but groceries, parks, gyms, and pharmacies too, so you can run a whole life on foot. Third, transit: a truly walkable building also walks you to a train, so the rest of the city opens up without a car.
The Loop wins because it has all three in abundance, packed into Chicago's flat, easy grid, and it takes eight of the top ten spots here. River North is the close runner-up, with State and Grand and AMLI River North landing right in the thick of it.
The honest trade-off
Maximum walkability comes with maximum buzz. These are downtown towers surrounded by activity, which is exactly the appeal for some people and a bit much for others.
If you want the city alive outside your window, this list is your shortlist. If you want walkable but calmer, look at the strong-but-not-frantic options in Lakeview, Lincoln Park, or the Gold Coast, which are very walkable in a more residential way. The point of ranking buildings is that you get to choose your exact dose.
How to use this
Treat walkability as a feature you can shop for, just like in-unit laundry. If walking everywhere is the goal, start your search with the buildings above and the neighborhoods around them.
