Where to Live if You Work in the Loop (Blue vs Red vs Brown Line)

TL;DR Every CTA line runs to the Loop, so the question is which one fits your life. The Red Line serves Gold Coast, Streeterville, and the North Side; the Blue Line serves Wicker Park and Logan Square; the Brown Line serves Lincoln Park and Old Town; and the Green and Pink Lines serve the West Loop. The closest neighborhoods get you downtown in 15 to 20 minutes.
Working in the Loop is the easiest commute in Chicago to solve, because every single L line runs there. The whole system was built to funnel into downtown. So the real question is not whether you can get to the Loop, but which line you want to live on. Here is the breakdown.
The closest neighborhoods, by the numbers

The Red Line: Gold Coast, Streeterville, and the North Side
The Red Line is the city's spine, running 24 hours a day. It serves the Gold Coast and (via a short walk) Streeterville right near downtown, then runs north through Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Uptown, and Edgewater.
If you want a one-seat ride that always runs, including late nights, the Red Line is the pick, and it gives you the widest range of North Side neighborhoods to choose from.
The Blue Line: Wicker Park and Logan Square
The Blue Line is the choice for the hip Northwest Side. It serves Wicker Park (about 19 minutes to the Loop) and Logan Square (about 25), and it also runs 24 hours and continues straight to O'Hare.
This is the line for renters who want creative neighborhoods, more vintage character, and a bit more value, with a fast, reliable trip downtown.
The Brown Line: Lincoln Park and Old Town
The Brown Line is the scenic, neighborhood-y option. It loops through River North at the Merchandise Mart and serves Old Town (Sedgwick), Lincoln Park, and Lakeview as it heads north and west.
It is a pleasant above-ground ride through some of the city's prettiest residential blocks, ideal if you want a leafier home base with a direct Loop connection.
The Green and Pink Lines: the West Loop
The Green and Pink Lines serve the West Loop and Fulton Market at the Morgan and Ashland stops, putting you about 20 minutes from the Loop while living in the city's hottest dining district. The Green Line also runs south through the South Loop and Bronzeville.
How to choose your line
Pick the lifestyle first, then the line will follow. Want always-on service and the most neighborhood options? Red Line. Want creative, value-leaning neighborhoods? Blue Line. Want leafy and residential? Brown Line. Want to live in the restaurant district? Green or Pink.
Because they all end up in the Loop, you really cannot go wrong. These times come from our transit data.
