TL;DR The most underrated amenity is a grocery store you can walk to. Grand Plaza in River North wins, with a Jewel-Osco just 22 meters away, a walk well under a minute, followed by One Chicago (Whole Foods, 38m), 1201 N Clark, and Eleven40, all under 65 meters from a full-size supermarket. Here are the ten buildings where the grocery run is a non-event.

Ask anyone who lives car-free in Chicago and they will tell you: the single best amenity is a real grocery store within a short walk. Nobody wants to haul a week of groceries a mile home. We measured the exact distance from every building we track to its nearest open full-size supermarket within a ten-minute walk. Here are the winners.

What 22 meters feels like

That is barely half a block. At Grand Plaza in River North, the Jewel-Osco is so close it is basically your pantry. You can pop down for one missing ingredient mid-recipe, grab fresh produce daily instead of stockpiling, and never think twice about whether you have a car.

Every building on this list sits under about 92 meters from a full supermarket, which in practice means a one-to-two-minute walk. The grocery run stops being a chore and becomes a quick errand on the way home.

Know your chain

The closest store matters, but so does which store. Our data shows the spread: Grand Plaza, 1201 N Clark, The Montrose, and The Archer sit on a Jewel-Osco, Gateway West Loop is on a Mariano's (great for prepared foods and a nicer experience), One Chicago and Optima Signature have a Whole Foods, and Eleven40 in the South Loop is about 64 meters from a Trader Joe's. Two neighborhoods show up twice in the top ten: River North claims the top two spots, and the West Loop lands both Gateway West Loop and 727 West Madison. Old Town does the same, with The Archer and Schiller Place Apartments. We break the buildings down by chain in our grocery across the street guide.

Why this beats a neighborhood score

A neighborhood can have great grocery access on average while a specific building is a long walk from the nearest store. Measuring the building itself is what tells you whether your actual grocery run is a two-minute stroll or a 15-minute trek. That is the difference this ranking captures.

How to use this

If a car-free life or simply an easy daily routine matters to you, treat grocery distance as a real amenity and weigh it like in-unit laundry. The buildings above make it effortless.
