Best Buildings for Outdoor Lovers: Most Parks Within a 10-Minute Walk

By the count of parks within a 10-minute walk on real sidewalks, Parkline Chicago in the Loop leads with 17 parks, thanks to Millennium Park, Maggie Daley, and Grant Park. AMLI Evanston, MDA Apartments, and Millennium on LaSalle follow with 15 each, and the Lakeshore East towers come in close behind. Green space at your doorstep, city at your back.

People assume that living downtown means trading away green space. The data says otherwise. We counted the parks within a 10-minute walk of every building we track, measured by true routed walking time on real sidewalks rather than straight-line distance, and the leaders are right in the heart of the city. Here is where the outdoors is at your door.

Why the Loop wins on green space

It surprises people, but the Loop has an extraordinary amount of parkland packed close together. Within a 10-minute walk of Parkline Chicago you can reach 17 different parks, including Millennium Park with its lawns and the Bean, Maggie Daley Park with its play gardens and climbing walls, the sprawling Grant Park, and the Chicago Riverwalk. MDA Apartments and Millennium on LaSalle sit in the same green pocket with 15 parks each.

That is more accessible green space than many leafy residential neighborhoods can claim, all while sitting on top of the city's best transit and dining.

Beyond the Loop

The Loop is not the only place green space stacks up. AMLI Evanston matches the downtown towers with 15 parks within a 10-minute walk, a reminder that the lakeside suburb is loaded with green space of its own. Just east of the Loop, the Lakeshore East towers Aqua and Shoreham & Tides come in close behind at 14 each, with the neighborhood's own park anchoring the cluster. River North also makes a strong showing, with 3Eleven and 369 Grand both at 13. The lakefront adds the ultimate park as well: Lake Michigan and the Lakefront Trail put the water, the beaches, and 18-plus miles of trail within easy reach, which is a different kind of outdoor living from a downtown park but just as valuable.

How to use this

If you want the outdoors close but love city living, you do not have to choose. The Loop, Lakeshore East, and River North buildings above give you both, parkland and the city, in the same short walk.
